Coalition commanders see signs of progress in Marja, a rural, former Taliban stronghold in one of the nine most violent districts in Afghanistan. e coalition has focused much of its effort in the two provinces that contain all nine of those districts: Helmand and Kandahar. From September through November of last year, 65% of all the country's violence occurred in those neighboring provinces and in Kunar, a small area on the northeastern border.
