The slave uprising John Brown had imagined never materialized and as his plan began to fail, he was forced by local militia and local townspeople to retreat with his small group of fighters into the engine house on the U.S. Armory grounds. There, a force of marines led by Robert E. Lee stormed the building and ended Brown's raid.
