The Mid-Atlantic region in 1859 as it would have appeared during John Brown's raid on the Harper's Ferry Arsenal. Railroads offered a new means of rapid transit between towns and cities. Once word of the raid had spread, militia and U.S. troops quickly arrived from Baltimore and Washington D.C.
